Glitter follows Billie Frank, a young singer in 1980s New York trying to build a career for herself. After a difficult childhood and years spent drifting between clubs, she is discovered by Julian "Dice" Black, a well-known DJ who recognizes her voice and helps her pursue a recording career. As her popularity grows, the two become romantically involved, and Billie learns that the music industry brings betrayal and disappointment along with success. The film stars Mariah Carey as Billie, alongside Max Beesley as Dice, Da Brat as Louise, Tia Texada as Roxanne, Valarie Pettiford as Lillian Frank and Ann Magnuson as Kelly.
Directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall, the film was his second feature, arriving between Gridlock'd in 1997 and Waist Deep in 2006. Kate Lanier wrote the screenplay, and she produced with Laurence Mark. The film was made for about 22 million dollars and took roughly 5 million dollars worldwide, a poor return on its budget.
Audiences were similarly unenthusiastic: on IMDb it holds 2.5 out of 10 from around 24,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 4.3 out of 10 from about 173 votes. A critics' rating of 3.1 out of 10 from 86 reviews is in line with those viewer scores rather than above them, leaving little disagreement between reviewers and audiences about how the film was received.
