Short description
Jackie Chan returns as Sergeant Chan Ka-Kui, a Hong Kong police officer whose unconventional methods have landed him in trouble with his superiors despite his success against crime. A drug lord he helped put behind bars is released from prison and seeks payback, targeting both the officer and his girlfriend, May. At the same time, a separate group of bombers is threatening the public and demanding money from local businesses, leaving Chan to handle both threats.
Jackie Chan directed the film, his eighth of fourteen in that role, following Project A - Part II and preceding Miracles: The Canton Godfather. He shares screenplay credit with Edward Tang, and Leonard Ho produced. Maggie Cheung plays May, with Bill Tung, Lam Kwok-Hung, Chor Yuen and Charlie Cho among the large credited cast of 78, supported by 60 crew members. The film runs 105 minutes and was made in Hong Kong.
Released in August 1988, the film grossed about 11 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 7 out of 10 from roughly 25,000 votes, while on TMDB it rates 7.1 out of 10 from around 661 votes. The critics' rating stands at 6.5 out of 10 from 19 reviews, somewhat lower than the audience scores, which suggests viewers responded to the action more warmly than reviewers did.
What's left behind the scenes
- While jumping out of a window of a moving bus, Chan received cuts to his face and head. He burned his face during an escape from a burning factory. While dodging a chair thrown at him, he cut the back of his head.
- Maggie Chung was seriously injured during the filming of the finale and was therefore unable to complete filming the movie. It is worth noting that after the incident with the metal frames, Chung is not filmed in close-up for the rest of the film. From now on, she is doubled and filming is done from a long distance or from behind. The behind-the-scenes footage shown at the end of the film shows how Chung sustained the injury.
- The road that Jackie crosses on his way to the restaurant is called Gloucester Rd. The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts can be seen in the background.
- Benny Lai (one of Jackie’s stuntmen, playing the guy with bad hearing) took lessons on how to use sign language from a teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing for his role.
- The final explosion of a factory filled with explosives was, at the time, the largest explosion in the history of Hong Kong cinema. A real building was blown up. For this purpose, Jackie invited pyrotechnics specialists from America.
- In the American version, the main character's name was changed from "Kevin Chan" to "Jackie Chan".
