The Final Conflict
Short description
Damien Thorn is now 32 years old and has become a powerful corporate figure, apparently using his influence for the public good. His ambitions reach further: he is appointed United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom, where he works to extend his control over world affairs while an astronomical event signals the second coming of Christ. A small group of monks, led by a priest armed with seven sacred daggers, sets out to stop him before his plan can be completed.
The film is the third installment of the Omen series and the first feature directed by Graham Baker, who later made Alien Nation and Beowulf. Andrew Birkin wrote the screenplay and produced alongside Harvey Bernhard. Sam Neill plays the adult Damien, with Rossano Brazzi, Don Gordon, Lisa Harrow, Barnaby Holm and Mason Adams among the credited cast.
Released by 20th Century Fox in March 1981, the film cost about 5 million dollars and returned roughly 20 million worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.8 from 671 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 4.3 from 21 reviews, lower than the audience score.
What's left behind the scenes
- The scene of the first priest's death took approximately two weeks to film.
- The 30-meter bridge fall was performed by stuntman Vic Armstrong, who later stated that it was the scariest stunt of his career, as he had previously only fallen from heights of 21 meters or less.
- Hazel Court (1926-2008) was cast in a cameo role at the request of producer Harvey Bernhard (1924-2014), as she was vacationing in Cornwall at the time of filming.
- As director Graham Baker commented, during the filming of scene 666 (the number of the beast, in the form of a birthmark on Damien Thorn's head), in which Barbara saw her deceased child, the camera suddenly jammed.
- The finale was filmed in one of the 13th-century monasteries in Yorkshire over 5 nights. It was incredibly cold on set, and bats were flying around.
- The scene where Damien Thorne addresses his followers was filmed in a quarry in Yorkshire. Approximately 450 extras participated in the filming. The lighting level in the quarry was very low.
