A Dangerous Woman

A Dangerous Woman follows Martha Horgan, a woman living in a small American town with her aunt Frances. Martha is honest to the point of bluntness and cannot tell a lie, which sets her apart from those around her and repeatedly puts her at odds with family and employers. After she reports that a coworker's boyfriend, Getso, has taken money from the till at the dry cleaner's where she works, the accusation turns back on her and she loses her job. Meanwhile, Frances has handyman Mackey repair her porch, and an intimacy develops between Mackey and Martha that draws all three of them into a painful situation.

Stephen Gyllenhaal directed the film, which came after Waterland in his filmography; Naomi Foner produced it and wrote the screenplay with Mary McGarry Morris. Debra Winger plays Martha, with Barbara Hershey as Frances, Gabriel Byrne as Mackey and David Strathairn as Getso. The supporting cast includes Chloe Webb and John Terry, part of a credited cast of 27.

Released in September 1993 through Gramercy Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, the drama runs 102 minutes and took in roughly 1 million dollars at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds 5.7 out of 10 from about 2,200 votes, while on TMDB it has 5.5 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes.
