A cavalry patrol escorts a wagon train across territory controlled by American Indian tribes, with an army doctor, Robert MacClaw, riding along as the unit's medical officer. When an ambush kills the officer in charge, MacClaw, though he has no combat experience, is the ranking officer left and must take command of the surviving troopers and the civilians travelling with them. He has to bring the column through hostile country and reach the safety of a fort.
The film is a Western directed by David Butler, released by Warner Bros. Pictures in February 1954 and running 94 minutes. It was written by Samuel Fuller and Russell S. Hughes and produced by David Weisbart. Guy Madison plays Captain MacClaw, with Joan Weldon as Martha Cutting, James Whitmore as Sergeant Elliott, Carl Benton Reid as Colonel Janeway, Harvey Lembeck as Private Gottschalk and Ray Teal as Dr. Trent. For Butler, it came after Calamity Jane in 1953 and formed the fourth of the four films listed in his directing career here, following Just Imagine and San Antonio.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.4 out of 10 from 753 votes. On TMDB it also stands at 6.4 out of 10, based on 17 votes. The two scores agree closely, indicating a modest and fairly consistent reception, with the larger IMDb sample carrying more weight than the small number of votes recorded on TMDB.
