Short description
Terry Dolittle works at a New York bank, where her job involves handling international currency transfers by computer. Rather than keeping to business, she entertains herself by sending jokes and personal notes to her contacts around the world, a habit her boss, Mr. Page, disapproves of and eventually forbids. Her routine is interrupted when a coded message arrives from an unknown sender who has broken into her terminal. Once she decodes it, she finds herself caught up in an espionage affair involving a man who says he is a secret agent trapped in Eastern Europe and pursued by the KGB. As people connected to the case are killed and Terry is chased, she stays in touch with the stranger and tries to help him.
The 1986 film was directed by Penny Marshall, her first time behind the camera, and written by David Franzoni, Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer. Whoopi Goldberg plays Terry, with Stephen Collins, John Wood, Carol Kane, Annie Potts and Peter Michael Goetz among the cast. Joel Silver and Lawrence Gordon produced.
Made for a budget of about 18 million dollars, it took roughly 30 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 4 out of 10 from 23 reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating is 6.1 out of 10 from 401 votes, a gap suggesting that viewers responded more warmly to Goldberg's comedy than reviewers did. Marshall went on to direct Big in 1988 and Awakenings in 1990.
