Short description
After the food storm that forced the residents of Swallow Falls to abandon their island home, Flint Lockwood is recruited by his idol Chester V to join The Live Corp Company, where the world's leading inventors develop technology meant to benefit humanity. Flint's new job comes with a warning to leave his past behind, but he soon learns that the machine he once built is still running, and it is now producing hybrid creatures that mix food with animals. With the island overrun by these beings, Flint and his friends return to deal with the consequences of his invention.
The film is an animated family comedy directed by Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn. For Cameron it followed Open Season 3, while for Pearn it came before The Willoughbys. John Francis Daley, Erica Rivinoja and Jonathan Goldstein wrote the screenplay, and Pam Marsden and Kirk Bodyfelt produced. Bill Hader and Anna Faris return as Flint and Sam Sparks, joined by James Caan as Flint's father, Will Forte as Chester V, Andy Samberg and Benjamin Bratt. It is a sequel to the 2009 film and reunites much of the earlier voice cast.
Released in September 2013, the film had a budget of 78 million dollars and earned about 248 million dollars worldwide, a solid return for an animated sequel. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from 125,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from 3,579 votes. A critics' rating of 6.4 out of 10 from 122 reviews places it close to the audience scores, indicating a comparable level of appreciation.
What's left behind the scenes
- Terry Crews voiced Earl instead of Mr. T. Mr. T was offered to voice the character in the sequel, but he declined. Most of the character's movements and mannerisms were taken from Terry Crews' on-screen persona.
- To portray the voice of pickled cucumbers, the actors filled their mouths with water and then delivered their lines.
- 120 creature designs were made for the film, but only 39 made it into the final cut. One of the creatures that didn't make the cut was a Tyrannosaurus Rex with a marshmallow body, a mouth made of graham crackers (a sweet biscuit made from whole wheat flour, used to make cheesecake crusts and other desserts), and chocolate teeth. This creature appears on screen only during the end credits.
