Short description
Ah Bu, a young woman from a small fishing village in Taiwan, finds a message in a bottle washed up on the shore and travels to Hong Kong hoping to meet the man who wrote it. The author turns out to be Albert, who is gay, so the hoped-for romance does not work out as she imagined. Through Albert she instead meets C.N. Chan, a wealthy businessman whose life is consumed by work and who has little room in it for anything else. Their involvement is complicated by interference from others and by the arrival of Ah Bu's boyfriend from Taiwan, and the story eventually moves back to Taiwan.
Vincent Kok directed the film, his second feature after Forbidden City Cop in 1996 and before Super Model in 2004. Jackie Chan produced and co-wrote it with Kok and Law Yiu-Fai, and stars as C.N. Chan opposite Shu Qi as Ah Bu. The cast also includes Tony Leung Chiu-wai as Albert, Wakin Chau, Richie Jen and Bradley James Allan, among 42 credited performers. Produced by Orange Sky Golden Harvest in Hong Kong and Taiwan, it runs 121 minutes and combines action, adventure, comedy and romance.
The film took about 5 million dollars worldwide, a modest return for a Jackie Chan vehicle of the period. Audiences rate it 6 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 15,000 votes and 6.5 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller base of 443 votes, placing it among the lighter, less celebrated entries in Chan's late-1990s output.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director Vincent Kok wanted to film the apartment of Jackie Chan's character directly in the actor's own office, but the idea didn't pan out. Regardless, many items from Chan's office were used on set, including his training dummy. According to the actor himself, his character was Jackie Chan "sixty to seventy percent" of the time in terms of clothing, training, lifestyle, friendliness, and commitment to environmental preservation.
