Short description
Joe Dirt is a good-natured janitor with an unusual hairstyle and a taste for worn-out clothes. When he was eight years old, his parents left him behind during a trip to the Grand Canyon, and he has spent the years since hoping to find them again. He sets off in his battered car to search for them, meeting a string of odd characters along the way. His story eventually draws the attention of radio host Zander Kelly, and Joe's account of his life becomes the subject of a broadcast that reaches far more listeners than he ever expected.
The film was directed by Dennie Gordon, arriving before What a Girl Wants and New York Minute in her directing credits. David Spade plays Joe and also wrote the screenplay with Fred Wolf, with Robert Simonds producing. Dennis Miller appears as Zander Kelly, joined by Brittany Daniel, Kid Rock, Adam Beach and Erik Per Sullivan as the young Joe.
Made for about 18 million dollars, it earned roughly 31 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 65,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.7 from a much smaller pool of 841. A critics' rating of 3.3 from 74 reviews places it noticeably below what audiences gave it. The cast and crew lists run to 66 and 86 names respectively.
What's left behind the scenes
- Joe Dirt (played by David Spade) reads a list of names on a tour bus that is the same as the one appearing in John Hughes' comedy 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' (1986).
- A hot air balloon descends near an oil derrick labeled 'Scotch Oil.' This was the name of the oil company owned by the family of Chris Farley (a friend of the main character) in Wisconsin.
- Rosanne Barr and Gary Busey were initially cast as the main character's parents. However, Barr chose to leave the project before filming was completed. Consequently, director Danny Gordon reshot all the parental scenes with Caroline Aaron and Fred Ward as Joe Dirt's mother and father.
- Screenwriters David Spade and Fred Wolf wanted Christopher Walken to play the role of Clem so badly that, upon learning there was a budget shortfall for his fee, they covered the remaining amount out of their own pockets. Shortly thereafter, Amy Pascal from Columbia Pictures reimbursed them.
- The character of Joe Dirt is to some extent based on a certain Ryan Taylor, who was a childhood friend of the lead actor, David Spade.
- According to David Spade, when sewage from a septic tank hit him, he asked, "Is that all? Is there more?" This line wasn't in the script, but the actor actually asked director Danny Gordon how much longer it would last, and it lasted for a full minute.
- Originally, the scene where hot dogs are thrown at the main character was significantly longer. It was decided to cut it because test audiences liked David Spade's character and didn't want to see him treated that way.
- The prop alligator was created by Amalgamated Dynamics (a company specializing in animatronics and special makeup effects for film, television, and commercials) based on the reptile from Joe Johnston's adventure comedy "Jumanji" (1995). When director Danny Gordon complained that the alligator looked unrealistic, CGI was used to make the reptile blink.
- In one of the scenes featuring the main character and the alligator, a cable is momentarily visible on screen.
- In one scene, the main character rams through a barrier with his car, but in the next moment, the barrier is shown completely intact.
