Broken follows Skunk, an eleven-year-old girl living in a suburban English neighbourhood with her father Archie and the family's au pair, Kasia. Skunk has grown up without her mother and manages her diabetes alongside the ordinary routines of childhood. Her world is shaken when she witnesses a violent attack on Rick, a gentle but vulnerable young neighbour, after the daughters of the volatile Bob Oswald accuse him of a serious crime. What begins as a summer of small hopes gives way to fear and confusion as the adults around Skunk fail to protect the people she cares about, and she is forced to confront a life that no longer feels familiar.
The film is directed by Rufus Norris, his first feature and the earliest entry in his directing credits, from a screenplay by Mark O'Rowe. Tim Roth plays Archie, Eloise Laurence plays Skunk, and Cillian Murphy, Zana Marjanović, Robert Emms and Rory Kinnear appear among a credited cast of twenty-nine. It was produced by Dixie Linder, Bill Kenwright and Tally Garner for Wild Bunch, Lipsync Productions, BBC Film and the BFI, and runs 91 minutes.
Released in August 2012, the film drew modest audiences but stronger viewer approval: it holds 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb from around 16,000 votes and 6.9 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 300. A critics' rating of 6.1 out of 10 from 54 reviews places it below the audience scores.
