This drama explores the meaning of hope, love, and existence through several interconnected stories. The narrative unfolds over the final six days of Eluana Englaro, a woman who remained in a vegetative state for 17 years. While her situation serves as a backdrop, the film focuses on various characters facing their own conflicts, including a senator torn between his party and his conscience, a pro-life activist and the secular man she loves, an actress praying for her own comatose daughter to wake up, and a woman attempting suicide while a young doctor tries to stop her.
Directed by Marco Bellocchio, this 2012 production followed his 2009 film Vincere. The screenplay was written by Bellocchio alongside Stefano Rulli and Veronica Raimo. The ensemble cast includes Isabelle Huppert, Alba Rohrwacher, Toni Servillo, Maya Sansa, Michele Riondino, and Pier Giorgio Bellocchio. Produced by RAI, Cattleya, and Babe Film in Italy and France, the movie had a budget of 6 million USD.
Audience reception has been consistent, with a rating of 6.3/10 on IMDb from 1,800 votes and a 6.3/10 on TMDB from 71 votes. Film critics gave the movie a slightly higher rating of 6.8/10 based on 26 reviews.
