Short description
FBI profiler Illeana Scott is brought to Montreal to help local police track a serial killer who takes on the identities of the people he murders. Her strongest lead is a museum employee who may be the only person to have seen the killer, and she works alongside detectives who are uneasy with her unconventional methods. As she tries to anticipate the killer's next move, she finds herself isolated in a city where she cannot be sure whom to trust.
D. J. Caruso directed the film, which followed his 2002 debut The Salton Sea and preceded Two for the Money, Disturbia and Eagle Eye, among others. Jon Bokenkamp wrote the screenplay, and Mark Canton and Bernie Goldmann produced. Angelina Jolie plays Illeana Scott, with Ethan Hawke as James Costa, Kiefer Sutherland as Christopher Hart, Gena Rowlands as Mrs. Rebecca Asher, Olivier Martinez as Paquette and Tchéky Karyo as Leclair. The film runs 103 minutes.
Released in March 2004, Taking Lives had a budget of 45 million USD and took about 65 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.2/10 from roughly 101,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4/10 from about 1,810 votes. A critics' rating of 4.8/10 from 157 reviews places it clearly below the audience scores.
