Unsung Hero

Unsung Hero is a family drama set in the early 1990s, when David Smallbone's music company in Australia goes under. He moves his wife Helen, who is expecting, and their children to the United States to start over, taking little with them besides their suitcases and their shared love of music. As David struggles to find his footing, Helen holds the household together through her faith, and the parents gradually notice that their children have real musical talent. The film is based on the true story of the Smallbone family and the rise of the Christian acts for KING & COUNTRY and Rebecca St. James.

Joel Smallbone directs alongside Richard Ramsey, and the two also wrote the screenplay; Smallbone plays David on screen, with Daisy Betts as Helen, Kirrilee Berger as Rebecca, Jonathan Jackson as Eddie DeGarmo, Candace Cameron-Bure as Kay Albright and Terry O'Quinn as Grandpa James. It is Smallbone's first feature as a director, followed by Drummer Boy, while for Ramsey it comes after The Song and Plus One at an Amish Wedding.

Made for about 6 million dollars, the film took in roughly 21 million worldwide, a strong return for its budget that suggests it reached well beyond a faith-based audience. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 5,800 votes, and on TMDB 7.1 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of voters, so audience response is consistently positive.
