Wilde

Wilde is a biographical drama about the Irish writer Oscar Wilde, following him from his early successes in London society through his marriage to Constance Lloyd and his growing intimacy with the young Lord Alfred Douglas, known as Bosie. Their relationship draws the hostility of Bosie's father, the Marquess of Queensberry, and the resulting legal conflict, set against British laws that criminalized homosexuality, sends Wilde to prison.

Brian Gilbert directed the film, his third feature after Vice Versa and Not Without My Daughter, from a screenplay by Julian Mitchell. Stephen Fry plays Wilde, with Jude Law as Bosie, Vanessa Redgrave as Wilde's mother Speranza, and Jennifer Ehle as Constance. The production was a German, British and Japanese co-production made for about 10 million dollars, and its worldwide box office take was considerably smaller than that figure.

On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 19,000 votes, a moderate score suggesting a generally favorable but not enthusiastic response from a large viewing base. The smaller TMDB sample of about 300 users gives 6.6 out of 10, and a critics' rating of 6.7 out of 10 from around 50 reviews places professional assessments close to the audience scores. The film runs 118 minutes.
