Lord Jim is a 1965 adventure drama adapted from Joseph Conrad's novel. Its central figure is a young merchant marine officer who serves aboard a ship carrying Muslim pilgrims. When a storm strikes and the vessel appears to be sinking, he and other crew members abandon it, leaving the passengers behind. The ship survives, and the officer faces an inquiry that strips him of his rank. Branded a coward, he spends years drifting through ports, tormented by shame and driven by the need to prove his courage. His search for a chance to redeem himself eventually takes him to a remote settlement in Southeast Asia, where he takes on a task for a man named Stein and becomes caught up in the struggles of a local community.
Richard Brooks directed and wrote the screenplay, and produced the film as well. It followed his earlier work on Elmer Gantry and Sweet Bird of Youth. Peter O'Toole plays the disgraced officer, with James Mason, Curd Jürgens, Eli Wallach, Jack Hawkins and Paul Lukas among the supporting cast. The production was a Columbia Pictures release, made with Columbia British Productions and Keep Films.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.7 from roughly 4,600 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.8 from a much smaller number of votes. The two audiences broadly agree on the film.
