Effie Gray

Effie Gray is a British drama set in Victorian England. It follows Euphemia "Effie" Gray, who marries the prominent art critic John Ruskin at a young age. The marriage remains unconsummated, and over years of growing distance and unhappiness, Effie finds herself drawn to John Everett Millais, a young painter who is Ruskin's protégé. With the support of her friend Lady Eastlake, she seeks to have the union annulled so she can build a life with Millais, defying the expectations of the society around her. The story is based on real events.

The film is directed by Richard Laxton, whose previous feature was Life and Lyrics in 2006. Emma Thompson wrote the screenplay and appears as Lady Eastlake, alongside Dakota Fanning as Effie, Greg Wise as Ruskin and Tom Sturridge as Millais. Julie Walters and Robbie Coltrane are also in the cast, which numbers thirty-one credited performers.

On IMDb the audience rating stands at 6 out of 10 from 199 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.6 out of 10 from 86 reviews places it slightly below the audience figure, suggesting a broadly mixed reception on both sides. The production, made by Sovereign Films in the United Kingdom, runs 104 minutes.
