Short description

Fort Casey, a remote Federation outpost, comes under heavy attack from the Bugs. A squad from the assault ship Alesia is sent to assist the starship John A. Warden and help evacuate the survivors. Before the two ships can link up, Carl Jenkins, now head of the Paranormal Warfare ministry, takes the Warden on a secret mission and vanishes into a nebula. The battle-hardened troopers are left to mount a rescue operation whose consequences could prove far darker than they expect.

Starship Troopers: Invasion is a 2012 animated action and science fiction film directed by Shinji Aramaki, working from a screenplay by Flint Dille and produced by Joseph Chou. It is the fifth feature in the chronological list of Aramaki's directed films, arriving between Halo Legends and Space Pirate Captain Harlock, and it sits within the Starship Troopers series alongside his later Traitor of Mars. The English-language voice cast includes Luci Christian as Carmen Ibanez, David Anthony Matranga as Johnny Rico, Justin Doran as Carl Jenkins, David Wald as Hero, Andrew Love as Bugspray and Leraldo Anzaldua as Ratzass, with 21 credited cast members in total. The production was a United States and Japan co-production from Stage 6 Films and Sola Digital Arts, running 89 minutes.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.8 from around 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.9 from 455 votes, indicating a modest audience response. A film critics' rating of 3.9 from 190 reviews is noticeably lower than those audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The animated film turned out to be much darker than Paul Verhoeven's 1997 movie, as the producers wanted to make it closer in spirit to Robert A. Heinlein's original 1959 novel than to Verhoeven's satire.
  • Johnny Rico was voiced not by Casper Van Dien, who played him in the 1997 film, but by David Matranga. Van Dien served as a producer and took an active part in the press tour.
