Short description

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 continues the animated adaptation of Frank Miller's story about an aging Bruce Wayne who has come out of retirement to clean up a Gotham City overrun by crime. Having dealt with the gang known as the Mutants, he faces a reunion with an old enemy, while the government sends Superman to stop him. The two former allies end up on a collision course.

The film is directed by Jay Oliva, the sixth of the thirteen features he has directed, following Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 and preceding Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. Bob Goodman wrote the screenplay, and the voice cast includes Peter Weller as Batman, Ariel Winter as Carrie Kelley, David Selby as Commissioner Gordon, Michael Emerson as the Joker and Mark Valley as Superman, among twenty-seven credited performers. Produced by DC Entertainment, DC Comics, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Premiere on a budget of four million dollars, it runs seventy-eight minutes.

Audience response has been strong: on IMDb the film holds 8.3 out of 10 from roughly sixty-one thousand votes, and on TMDB it sits at 7.9 out of 10 from more than sixteen hundred votes. These figures place it among the more highly regarded entries in the line of DC animated features.

What's left behind the scenes

  • When Batman tests his new suit, the Batmobile from Tim Burton's sci-fi action movie 'Batman' (1989) can be spotted in the cave.
  • During the fight between Batman and Superman, a portrait of Christopher Reeve as Superman flashes on the screen.
  • It is claimed that the portrayal of the Joker by Michael Emerson was based on the acting style of Paul Linde.
