Short description
Frank Morrison is divorced from Susan, and their twelve-year-old son Danny lives with Susan and her new husband, Rick Barnes, a wealthy and well-liked local businessman. Danny has a habit of lying and acting out, so when he claims to have witnessed Rick kill a man, no one takes him seriously except Frank, who comes to believe his son and sets out to protect him from the man Susan has married.
The film is a crime thriller directed by Harold Becker from a screenplay by Lewis Colick. It was the eighth film Becker directed, following Mercury Rising in 1998, and it was produced by Jonathan D. Krane, Donald De Line and Becker himself for Paramount, De Line Pictures and Jonathan D. Krane Productions. John Travolta plays Frank, Matt O'Leary plays Danny, Vince Vaughn plays Rick and Teri Polo plays Susan, with Ruben Santiago-Hudson and Steve Buscemi in supporting roles.
Released in October 2001, Domestic Disturbance runs 89 minutes and was made for a budget of 75 million US dollars, while its worldwide box office came to 54 million. Audiences rate it modestly: on IMDb it holds 5.6 out of 10 from around 30,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.8 out of 10 from 481 votes. A film critics' rating of 4.3 out of 10 from 99 reviews places it below those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was re-edited three times, removing strong language and scenes of violence, until it finally met the criteria for a PG-13 rating (not recommended for children under 13) by the American Film Association. A total of 23 minutes of footage was cut.
- The original version of the film lasted 111 minutes, but it was cut down to 89 minutes, resulting in numerous plot holes, with many characters appearing and disappearing from the story without explanation.
