Short description
Jason X takes the long-running Friday the 13th series into outer space. In the 21st century, the killer Jason Voorhees is captured and held at a research facility, but he breaks free and slaughters the soldiers sent to move him. A young project leader, Rowan, lures him into a cryogenic chamber and freezes him, though she is trapped in the ice as well. Roughly four centuries later, a team of archaeology students from a human colony travels back to an Earth left toxic and barren by pollution to study the ruins of the old civilization. They recover two frozen bodies from an abandoned research center and bring them aboard their ship, unaware that one belongs to Jason. He revives during the return journey, and the students, along with a squad of soldiers, find themselves hunted through the vessel's corridors. Kane Hodder plays Jason, with Lexa Doig as Rowan and David Cronenberg in a supporting role as Dr. Wimmer.
James Isaac directed the film, which came between The Horror Show and Skinwalkers in his filmography. Todd Farmer wrote the screenplay, and Noel Cunningham produced. Made for about eleven million dollars, it earned roughly seventeen million worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 4.9 out of ten from more than fifteen hundred votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Ten silicone mannequins were created for the scene depicting the death of Christie Angus's character. The actress was cast entirely—including her head—so that they could later film the scene in which Jason smashes the character's frozen head against a table. The mannequins were painted to match the actress's skin tone, and hair was attached to the heads. The actress was told that if the filmmakers managed to capture the necessary shot as quickly as possible, she could keep one of the remaining mannequins as a souvenir. Unfortunately for her, all ten mannequins were used during filming.
- In the scene where Jason throws the character played by Todd Farmer against a wall, the stunt double filling in for the actor had his nose broken.
- In the scene where the character played by Yani Gelman opens the door and is stabbed, blood splashes into the face of Melody Johnson, who played Kinsey, causing her to scream. The actress's reaction was genuine. Apparently, the liquid used instead of blood was not supposed to hit the actress's face; it happened by accident. She didn't actually scream because a friend was being killed before her eyes, but because the liquid was caustic and stung her eyes. Her reaction was instinctive, and they decided to keep this take in the film.
- Betsy Palmer was approached for the role of Mrs. Voorhees, but she declined.
