Girl America is a drama and fantasy film about a young girl named Emma who struggles with isolation and fear while living in a strict socialist orphanage. To cope with her loneliness, she imagines a second version of herself to talk and argue with. Emma holds onto a dream of moving to America, where she believes her father is waiting for her. Even after joining a foster family that provides for her material needs, she continues to feel unsettled and must find the inner strength to persevere through ongoing hardships.
The film was directed and produced by Viktor Tauš, with a screenplay written by David Jařab. It is a co-production between Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland, involving production companies such as Barrandov Studio, TV Nova, BFILM.cz, and Axman Production. The cast features Klára Kitto, Julie Šoucová, and Pavla Beretová all portraying the character of Ema Černá, also known as Amerikánka. Other roles are played by Lucie Žáčková, Tomáš Sean Pšenička, and Klára Melíšková, among a total credited cast of 62 people. The movie has a runtime of 108 minutes.
