Let It Shine

Cyrus DeBarge is a shy teenager in Atlanta who leads his church's youth choir, waits tables, and writes rap songs under the name Truth. His father is a pastor with little use for rap music, and Cyrus keeps his ambitions largely to himself. When his childhood friend Roxanne Andrews, now a pop star, sponsors a songwriting contest through her label, Cyrus and his best friend Kris enter. Cyrus's song wins, but an image submitted with the entry leads Roxanne to believe that Kris is the author, and Kris lets her go on thinking it. Cyrus steps aside while Kris enjoys the credit and Roxanne's growing attention, even though the song was written for her.

The film draws on the Cyrano de Bergerac story, with a young man courting through another person's performance, and it was directed by Paul Hoen. It is the ninth of sixteen films he directed, arriving between Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam and Cloud 9. Tyler James Williams plays Cyrus, Coco Jones plays Roxanne, and Trevor Jackson plays Kris, with supporting roles from Brandon Mychal Smith, Dawnn Lewis and Alex Désert.

Released in 2012, it runs 104 minutes and is a Disney television film. On IMDb it holds 6.4/10 from around 5,200 votes, while on TMDB it averages 7/10 from roughly 327 votes, a small sample that rates it higher than the larger IMDb group does.
