Short description

In this musical family adventure, Walter, a puppet and devoted fan of the Muppets, joins his brother Gary and Gary's girlfriend Mary on a trip to Los Angeles. There they learn that the oil tycoon Tex Richman plans to buy the Muppets' old theater and tear it down to drill for oil beneath it. With the Muppets long since scattered into ordinary jobs, Walter, Gary and Mary help Kermit track down his former troupe and stage a telethon to raise the ten million dollars needed to keep the theater.

James Bobin directed the film, his first feature, followed by Muppets Most Wanted, Alice Through the Looking Glass and Dora and the Lost City of Gold. Jason Segel, who plays Gary, wrote the screenplay with Nicholas Stoller, and the cast also includes Amy Adams as Mary, Chris Cooper as Richman and Rashida Jones. Steve Whitmire and Peter Linz are among the puppeteers.

Released in 2011, the film had a budget of 45 million dollars and took about 165 million dollars worldwide. It holds a 6.7 rating on TMDB from roughly 1,700 votes and a critics' rating of 7.9 from 234 reviews, so reviewers rated it more favorably than the wider audience did.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Towards the end of the film, you can see a billboard advertising the animated film "Cars 2".
  • Upon completing work on the film, Jason Segel was given a toy version of himself.
  • There was very little room for the puppeteers in the car, so in the scene with the car full of Muppets, Amy Adams and Jason Segel had to operate the puppets beside them.
  • To preserve the original style and charm of the Muppets, the filmmakers decided to use only old-school techniques, such as remote control or battery-operated puppets, rather than computer animation.
  • In one of the scenes, they planned to show Elmo from the series 'Sesame Street' (1969). According to Jason Segel, lawyers prevented this. Sesame Street Muppets had previously appeared in 'The Muppet Show' (1976-1981), James Foley's 'The Muppet Movie' (1979), Jim Henson's 'The Great Muppet Caper' (1981), Frank Oz's 'The Muppets Take Manhattan' (1984), as well as in various specials, but all of this occurred before Disney acquired the rights to the Muppets in 2004.
  • Frank Oz was originally intended to be the director, but he disliked the script so much that he left the project entirely.
  • One of the early script versions proposed that at the end of the film, it would be revealed that Tex Richman was actually Kermit in a human costume; however, they decided to scrap this idea so that young viewers would not associate Kermit with deception. The opinion of Steve Whitmire, who voiced Kermit, also played a role; he threatened to demand that his name be removed from the credits if such a plot twist were included.
