Jobe Smith, the intellectually disabled lawnmower man who became something more than human through virtual reality experiments, now exists only as a mind inside a computer network. He wants to finish the work begun by Dr. Benjamin Trace, whose virtual-reality program called Chiron could link the world's computers into one system, and he is willing to destroy anyone in his way to build a digital empire. Trace, along with Dr. Cori Platt and a boy named Peter, becomes the only obstacle standing between Jobe and control of the information networks.
Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace was released in 1996 and marks the directing debut of Farhad Mann, who also wrote the screenplay and whose later credits include Can't Buy My Love and Mixed Baggage. Patrick Bergin plays Trace, Matt Frewer takes over the role of Jobe, and Austin O'Brien, Ely Pouget and Camille Cooper appear in supporting parts. The production, made by New Line Cinema on a budget of 15 million dollars, returned only about 2 million dollars worldwide, a small fraction of its cost.
The film holds a rating of 2.6 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 11,000 votes and 3.3 out of 10 on TMDB from 181 votes. A critics' rating of 3 out of 10 from 11 reviews places professional opinion close to the audience verdict.
