Roxanne

Roxanne is a romantic comedy that moves the story of Edmond Rostand's play Cyrano de Bergerac to a small town in the Pacific Northwest. C. D. Bales is the local fire chief: quick-witted, well-read and confident in his work. His unusually large nose, however, keeps him from telling Roxanne Kowalski how he feels about her. Roxanne, an astronomer, is drawn instead to Chris McConnell, a new member of the fire crew who is good-looking but hopeless at expressing himself. C. D. agrees to write Chris's love letters and to feed him the words that win Roxanne over, and the arrangement grows harder for him to keep up as she responds to a voice that is really his.

Steve Martin wrote the screenplay and plays C. D., with Daryl Hannah as Roxanne and Rick Rossovich as Chris. Fred Schepisi directed, placing the film between Iceman and Evil Angels in a career that runs from Libido in 1973 to Words and Pictures in 2014. Shelley Duvall, John Kapelos and Fred Willard appear in supporting roles.

Made for about 12 million dollars, the film took roughly 40 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6/10 from around 50,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.4/10 from far fewer voters. A critics' rating of 7.6/10 from 43 reviews is noticeably higher than either audience figure.
