Based on the novel by Robert Seethaler, this historical drama follows the life of Andreas Egger over eight decades in the Austrian Alps. Sent to a remote valley as a young orphan, Andreas endures a harsh childhood under the care of a cruel relative. As he matures into a skilled laborer, he participates in the construction of early mountain transport systems that bring electricity and modernization to the region. While he finds romantic happiness with a woman named Marie, their time together is brief, and his life is further shaped by the arrival of war and political upheaval.
Directed by Hans Steinbichler, the film features a cast led by Stefan Górski and August Zirner, who portray Andreas at different stages of his adulthood. Other roles include Julia Franz Richter as Marie and Andreas Lust as Hubert. The production was a collaboration between companies from Germany, Austria, and Italy.
The film has been received positively by audiences, maintaining a rating of 7/10 on IMDb from 1,400 votes and a matching 7/10 on TMDB based on 54 votes.
