New Police Story

After a gang of thrill-seeking young criminals wipes out his entire squad during a botched operation, Hong Kong inspector Chan Kwok Wing survives while the officers who served under him do not. Overcome by guilt, he withdraws from duty and descends into heavy drinking. A younger officer, Frank Cheng, who lost a relative in the same ambush, pulls him back from that collapse and pushes him to take on the gang again, setting the two of them against its leader, Joe Kwan, and his crew.

Benny Chan directed the film, working from a screenplay by Alan Yuen, with Barbie Tung Wan-Si, Willie Chan and Solon So Chi-Hung producing. It followed Chan's Who Am I? and Gen-X Cops and arrived eight years before Rob-B-Hood in the director's filmography. Jackie Chan plays Wing, Nicholas Tse plays Frank, Charlie Yeung plays Ho Yee, Charlene Choi plays Sa Sa, and Daniel Wu plays Joe. The credited cast runs to 131 names. Among a body of work that includes A Moment of Romance, Shaolin and Raging Fire, this 2004 entry is a large-scale Hong Kong action production shot across Hong Kong, mainland China and Thailand.

The film was released in September 2004 and runs 123 minutes. Its reported budget of roughly 80 million US dollars makes it expensive for its kind, and the worldwide gross of about 9 million dollars fell far short of that outlay. On IMDb it holds 6.9/10 from around 31,000 votes; on TMDB it stands at 7.2/10 from roughly 851 votes.
