Hui Buh: The Castle Ghost
Short description
Hui Buh is a ghost who has haunted Burgeck Castle for five centuries. Despite possessing an official license to frighten others, he struggles to be scary. When King Julius and Countess Leonora arrive at the castle, the ghost attempts to drive them away, but his efforts fail. During the conflict, his license is destroyed, leaving him unable to legally haunt the premises. He must then find a way to get recertified and regain his powers.
This German adventure comedy blends live action with animation. It was directed by Sebastian Niemann, who later directed Hui Buh and the Witch's Castle in 2022. The screenplay was written by Niemann and Dirk Ahner. The film stars Michael Herbig as the titular ghost, alongside Christoph Maria Herbst, Heike Makatsch, Ellenie Salvo González, Hans Clarin, and Rick Kavanian.
Produced by Constantin Film, Rat Pack Filmproduktion, and Medienfonds GFP, the movie had a budget of 10 million USD and earned 14 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception is mixed, with a rating of 4.9/10 on IMDb based on 3,500 votes and a slightly higher score of 5.8/10 on TMDB from 236 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- When translated into Russian, the name of the main character, the ghost Hui Buh, sounds very vulgar, so the translators used the name U-Bu.
- Filming took place in Munich (Germany) and Prague (Czech Republic) from February 14th to April 29th, 2005.
- The film is based on the novel by German writer Eberhard Alexander Burgh.
- The well-known German actor Hans Clarin voiced the ghost of Ui-Bu in numerous German radio productions for more than two decades, becoming a kind of hallmark of the series. In recognition of his services, he was given the role of the castellan of Burg Eck Castle, and after he died shortly after filming ended, the film was dedicated to his memory.
