Short description

Following is a British thriller about a young man in London who wants to be a writer. Unemployed and drifting, he amuses himself by picking strangers in the street and trailing them, telling himself the habit feeds his work. His luck runs out when he follows the wrong person: Cobb, a burglar who notices the tail and turns the tables. Cobb draws the younger man into his break-ins, and the pair begin entering other people's homes and sifting through their belongings, with the intruder taking a clear pleasure in the access it gives him to private lives.

Christopher Nolan wrote, directed and produced the film, his second feature after the short Doodlebug and the one that came before Memento. Working with producer Emma Thomas, he shot on a modest scale with a small cast. Jeremy Theobald plays the young man, Alex Haw is Cobb, and Lucy Russell appears as a blonde woman connected to a criminal figure. John Nolan, Dick Bradsell and Gillian El-Kadi round out the cast.

The film runs just 69 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from a few thousand votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 7.1 from nearly two thousand votes, with critics' reviews averaging the same score.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Alex Howe's character introduces himself as Jeremy Theobald Cobb. This is the same name as Leonardo DiCaprio's character in the film "Inception" (2010), which was also directed by Christopher Nolan.
  • At 22 minutes and 41 seconds, a Batman logo can be seen on the apartment door. Interestingly, seven years later, Christopher Nolan would go on to direct the film 'Batman Begins' (2005).
  • In the main character's apartment, one can spot the famous shot from the movie 'The Shining' (1980), where Jack Torrance peeks through a broken door.
  • Christopher Nolan's directorial debut.
  • The idea for the film came to Nolan while he was in college and living in central London on Tottenham Court Road, near Oxford Street, one of the busiest streets in the world. Much like the film's protagonist, he was struck by how overcrowded the British capital was, especially its central part. Around the same time, the director experienced an unpleasant event—intruders broke into his apartment and stole his personal belongings.
  • In the scene where the main character steals money from the safe, at 39:20 he is seen wearing gloves; in the next shot, he is not, and then he returns home wearing gloves again, and we see him taking them off.
  • At 56:47, Cobb stuffs a glove into the main character's mouth and leaves. It's visible that the glove is halfway sticking out, but in the next shot, it is almost entirely in the mouth.
