Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure

Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure is a 1988 animated action film from Japan, produced by Toei Animation. Master Roshi, having finished training Goku and Krillin, brings them to a martial arts tournament on a mysterious island ruled by Emperor Chaozu. The emperor has surrounded himself with figures from the Red Ribbon Army, and his closest adviser, the Crane Hermit, is secretly gathering the seven Dragon Balls with help from the mercenary Tao Pai Pai and Tenshinhan. While the adviser claims the wish will be used to find the emperor's missing fiancée, his real aim is to have Chaozu killed and seize control of the country. Roshi's students are drawn into the intrigue around the throne.

The film is directed by Kazuhisa Takenouchi, whose later credits include Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem in 2003, One Piece: Curse of the Sacred Sword in 2004 and Dragon Ball Z Kai in 2024. The screenplay is credited to Akira Toriyama and Yoshifumi Yûki. The voice cast is led by Masako Nozawa as Goku, with Mayumi Tanaka as Krillin, Hiromi Tsuru as Bulma, Kōhei Miyauchi as Master Roshi, Hirotaka Suzuoki as Tenshinhan and Hiroko Emori as Chaozu. Sixty-one cast members are credited in all.

Running 48 minutes, the film took about 10 million dollars worldwide. It holds a rating of 6.8 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 3,200 votes and 6.7 out of 10 on TMDB from around 315 votes, indicating a modest but steady audience appreciation over the years.
