The Hound of the Baskervilles

In nineteenth-century England, the wealthy landowner Hugo Baskerville abducts a local woman, who escapes across the moor. Pursuing her, Hugo encounters a monstrous creature and dies. A century later, his descendant Charles Baskerville is found dead on the moors, and the family friend Dr. Richard Mortimer travels to London to seek help from Sherlock Holmes, fearing for the life of the estate's new owner, Sir Henry Baskerville. A legend holds that a giant hellhound haunts the Baskerville line, but Holmes suspects that someone stands to gain from Sir Henry's death and sets out to identify the killer before it is too late.

The film is based on Arthur Conan Doyle's novel and was directed by Terence Fisher for Hammer Film Productions, released by United Artists in 1959. It is the fifth of the sixteen features he directed in the chronological order given, coming after The Revenge of Frankenstein and before The Mummy. Peter Bryan wrote the screenplay, and Anthony Hinds and Kenneth Hyman produced. Peter Cushing plays Holmes, André Morell is Doctor Watson, and Christopher Lee appears as Sir Henry Baskerville, with Marla Landi, David Oxley and Francis de Wolff in supporting roles.

The film runs eighty-seven minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.9 from around 14,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 from roughly 390 votes, indicating a solid audience following rather than a widely seen title. A critics' rating of 7.8 from twenty reviews places it somewhat higher among reviewers than among general viewers.
