Rob works for Joe's Streetcleaning Agency, a crew that clears away the debris left behind by fatal accidents. The job leaves him with a fixation on dead bodies, and he collects stray body parts that he keeps in jars at home. His girlfriend Betty shares the attraction, and their shared obsession takes a further step when Rob brings home a complete but badly decomposed corpse he has recovered. The pair use the body for their own purposes, but Rob's grip on the arrangement is shaken when Betty's attention turns toward the corpse rather than him. The story moves toward bleak consequences for the couple.
Jörg Buttgereit directed and co-wrote the film with Franz Rodenkirchen, who also appears in a small role. Manfred O. Jelinski produced it through Jelinski & Buttgereit. The cast includes Beatrice Manowski as Betty along with Harald Lundt, Colloseo Schulzendorf, Volker Hauptvogel and Patricia Leipold. It runs 72 minutes, and Buttgereit followed it three years later with Nekromantik 2, making it the first of the two features he directed in that period.
The film is a low-budget German horror drama that centers on necrophilia. It holds a rating of 4.8 on IMDb from around 12,000 votes and 5.1 on TMDB from a much smaller pool of 332 votes, placing it among niche cult titles rather than widely embraced horror. Both audience ratings sit below the midpoint.
