Father of the Bride

George Banks is a middle-class shoe company owner whose comfortable life is upended when his 22-year-old daughter Annie announces she is engaged to Bryan MacKenzie, a young man from a wealthy family. While his wife Nina tries to share in Annie's happiness, George struggles to accept that his daughter will soon leave home, and he finds little to like in his future son-in-law. His unease grows as the wedding plans expand, the costs mount, and he must get along with Bryan's parents. When the ceremony is held at the family home and an eccentric wedding planner takes charge of the proceedings, George's composure frays further, though he ultimately wants his daughter to be happy.

Charles Shyer directed the film, his second feature after Baby Boom, from a screenplay he wrote with Nancy Meyers, who also produced. Steve Martin plays George, with Diane Keaton as Nina, Kimberly Williams-Paisley as Annie, Kieran Culkin as young Matty Banks, George Newbern as Bryan and Martin Short as the wedding planner Franck Eggelhoffer. Released in December 1991, the film cost about 20 million dollars and took in roughly 89 million worldwide.

On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from more than 82,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6.5 from a much smaller number of ratings. A critics' score of 6 out of 10 across 44 reviews places it close to the audience verdict. Shyer returned to these characters in Father of the Bride Part II in 1995.
