Short description

Bait is an Australian horror film set in a coastal town that is hit by a tsunami. A group of shoppers becomes trapped inside a flooded supermarket, where a great white shark has been swept in with the water. Among the survivors are Josh, a lifeguard still dealing with the loss of his best friend in a shark attack a year earlier, and Tina, the woman he once planned to marry. As the water rises, the people inside the building must find a way to escape both the shark and the collapsing structure.

The film was directed by Kimble Rendall and released in 2012. It is his second feature, following Cut in 2000 and preceding 7 Guardians of the Tomb in 2018. The screenplay was written by Russell Mulcahy, John Kim and S.P. Krause, and the cast includes Xavier Samuel, Richard Brancatisano, Sharni Vinson, Phoebe Tonkin, Julian McMahon and Alex Russell. Produced with a budget of about 30 million US dollars, it took in roughly 26 million worldwide.

Audience response has been moderate. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.2 out of 10 from around 21,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.7 out of 10 from roughly 825 votes. The film is a straightforward creature feature that places its characters in an enclosed, waterlogged space and builds tension from the limited options available to them.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, there were plans to film a sequel titled "Deep Water" about a plane traveling from China to Australia that crashes into the Pacific Ocean. However, in 2014, it was decided to abandon the idea due to the similarity between the script's story and the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which flew from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
  • Three animatronic sharks were used in the filming. Director Kimble Rendell wanted to avoid computer graphics entirely, but this proved impossible due to the film's modest budget.
