Hercules
Short description
Hercules is a young man of enormous strength living among ordinary people, unaware that he is the son of Zeus. Once he learns the truth about his origins, he sets out to earn his place among the gods of Mount Olympus by becoming a true hero. Hades, ruler of the underworld, has his own designs on Olympus and works to keep Hercules from succeeding. With the winged horse Pegasus and his trainer Philoctetes at his side, Hercules faces monsters and other trials, while his feelings for Meg complicate his path.
The film was released in 1997 and runs 93 minutes. It is an animated family adventure with comedy, fantasy and romance elements, made by Walt Disney Pictures and Walt Disney Feature Animation on a budget of 85 million dollars, and it took in 253 million dollars worldwide. Ron Clements and John Musker directed, working from a screenplay they wrote with Irene Mecchi; Clements, Musker and Alice Dewey produced. It followed the pair's The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, and preceded Treasure Planet, The Princess and the Frog and Moana. Voices include Tate Donovan as Hercules, Josh Keaton and Roger Bart as the younger Hercules, Danny DeVito as Philoctetes, James Woods as Hades and Susan Egan as Meg, among 35 credited cast members and 65 credited crew.
On IMDb the film holds 4.9 from 619 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.5 from 8,116 votes. A film critics' rating of 7.8 from 113 reviews places it above both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- At the beginning, Hermes says that Orpheus designed the bouquet. However, Orpheus was a contemporary of Hercules.
- Ricky Martin voiced adult Hercules in the Mexican-Spanish version of the film.
- At the beginning of the film, Narcissus can be seen as a god. However, he was actually a mortal.
- Hades, acting as the villain, resembles a Christian devil more than the Greek god of the underworld, who, in reality, did not inflict harm on anyone, ruling the realm of the dead. In the film, he is a hot-tempered, impulsive businessman who hates his job and dreams of overthrowing Zeus and his entourage from Olympus. Initially, Hades was conceived as slow and menacing, but James Woods, who voices him, did things his own way.
- Hercules is not the son of Zeus and Hera. In mythology, he is the son of Zeus and a mortal woman. For this, Hera was furious and sent Hercules many trials to destroy him. However, the original idea didn’t quite fit the film. In the cartoon, he is the son of Zeus and Hera. Alcmena and her husband, Amphitryon, appear in the Disney version as his adoptive parents.
- When Hercules enters Phil's house, he hits his head on the mast of the Argo. Phil tells him to be careful. In mythology, the mast of the Argo killed Jason.
- During the scene where Hercules is posing for the artist, he is wearing a lion's skin. When Hercules takes it off, you can see that the lion has a scar above its left eye. Just like Scar in The Lion King.
- Phil’s line after saving Meg from the Centaur, “Next time, don’t let your guard down because of a pair of big goo-goo eyes,” originally read: “Next time, don’t let your guard down because of a pair of big, blue eyes.” However, when the scene was in color, it turned out that Meg’s eyes are purple.
