Thunderstruck is a family comedy about a teenager named Brian Newall who is a devoted fan of basketball star Kevin Durant but has no real ability on the court himself. During a meeting with his idol, something inexplicable happens and the two swap abilities: Brian suddenly plays like a professional, while Durant loses his touch and can no longer make a shot. Brian becomes the standout of his high school team, but as the season's decisive games approach, he comes to understand that talent alone is not enough and sets out to make things right.
The film was directed by John Whitesell and released in 2012, following Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son in his filmography. The screenplay is by Eric Champnella and Jeff Farley, with Mike Karz producing. Kevin Durant appears as himself, alongside Taylor Gray as Brian, Jim Belushi as Coach Amross, Brandon T. Jackson, Doc Shaw and Tristin Mays, among a credited cast of 22.
Reception was modest. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.2 from around 6,300 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2 from roughly 261 votes. A critics' rating of 4.4 from 11 reviews places it below both audience scores, indicating a largely unfavorable response from reviewers compared with a somewhat warmer one from viewers.
