The Missing
Short description
Set in the American Southwest in the 1880s, The Missing follows Maggie Gilkeson, a rancher raising two daughters on her own. Her estranged father, Samuel Jones, returns after many years spent living among the Apache, hoping to mend their relationship, but Maggie refuses him. That changes when her older daughter, Lilly, is abducted by a group of renegades and taken toward the Mexican border. Maggie turns to Samuel for help, and together with her younger daughter, Dot, they set out after the kidnappers.
Ron Howard directed the film, the fifteenth of the thirty-two features he has directed in chronological order, following A Beautiful Mind and preceding Cinderella Man. Ken Kaufman wrote the screenplay, and Brian Grazer, Howard and Daniel Ostroff produced. Cate Blanchett plays Maggie, with Tommy Lee Jones as Samuel, Evan Rachel Wood as Lilly and Jenna Boyd as Dot; Aaron Eckhart and Val Kilmer also appear among the twenty-four credited cast members.
The production had a budget of 60 million dollars and took in about 38 million dollars worldwide, a result that fell short of its cost. On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.5 out of 10 from roughly 41,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 from a much smaller base of 713 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 from 169 reviews places it in similar territory to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Val Kilmer, who owns a ranch near the filming location and lives there periodically, agreed to a small role in the film as part of his participation in a New Mexico state film development investment program.
- To ensure the authenticity of their characters, Tommy Lee Jones and Eric Schweig spent many hours learning several phrases in the Apache language, which is now almost extinct. Their efforts were highly appreciated by the few remaining native speakers of the language and culture.
- Filming of the picture took place from February 10 to June 2003 in the state of New Mexico, USA.
