Inescapable

Adib Abdel Kareem left Syria years ago under circumstances he has never fully explained, settling in Toronto and building a comfortable life there with a wife, two daughters and a good job. When his oldest daughter, Muna, disappears in Damascus, he is forced to return to the country he abandoned. His former fiancée, Fatima, is still there, and she helps him search even as she confronts him over the way he cut off contact. A Canadian consular official, Paul, works alongside them as Adib faces the people and memories he thought he had put behind him.

Inescapable is a 2012 thriller with romance elements, directed by Ruba Nadda from her own screenplay. It is the earlier of the two films she has directed, followed by October Gale in 2014. Alexander Siddig plays Adib, with Joshua Jackson as Paul, Marisa Tomei as Fatima and Oded Fehr among the supporting cast. Nadda's story moves between Canada and a Syria gripped by unrest.

The film had a budget of about 4 million dollars and received modest audience scores, with ratings of 5.2 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 2,900 votes and 5.2 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes. Critics were less enthusiastic, giving it 4.2 out of 10 across 23 reviews, below the audience scores. The production was a German, Canadian and South African co-production.
