Love, Marilyn

Love, Marilyn is a documentary built around Marilyn Monroe's own private writing. Drawing on journals, letters and poems found among her belongings, including material linked to Arthur Miller, the film presents her through her words rather than through the familiar Hollywood image. A group of actors, among them Elizabeth Banks, Lindsay Lohan, Evan Rachel Wood, Uma Thurman and Ben Foster, read and perform these texts, while archive footage of Monroe herself runs alongside. The result sets the public star against the private woman, touching on her career, her relationships and the tension between the figure the world saw and the person behind it.

Liz Garbus directed and co-wrote the film, which was released in 2013. It was her first feature documentary, preceding Lost Girls, Becoming Cousteau and two 2026 titles, Give Me the Ball! and Love, Rendered. The screenplay is credited to Truman Capote, Garbus and Ralph Greenson, and the picture was produced by Stanley F. Buchthal, Garbus and Amy Hobby, with StudioCanal and HBO Documentary Films among the production companies. Twenty-three cast members are credited.
