Soar Into the Sun

Soar Into the Sun follows Jung Tae-hoon, a gifted South Korean fighter pilot whose appetite for showing off ends his time with the elite Black Eagles aerobatic team. Reassigned to a combat squadron, he clashes with its disciplined top pilot, Lee Cheol-hee, while forming bonds with his new comrades and growing close to Yoo Se-young, the maintenance sergeant. When a North Korean aircraft crosses into southern airspace, the squadron is drawn into a dogfight that leaves one pilot dead and another missing. Tae-hoon and Cheol-hee must set aside their rivalry and fly together to recover their missing comrade and stop the incident from escalating toward war.

Kim Dong-won directed and wrote the film, which sits third in the three features he directed and was released in 2012. Rain, the singer and actor, stars as Tae-hoon, with Yu Jun-sang, Shin Sae-kyeong, Kim Sung-su, Lee Ha-na and Lee Jong-suk among a credited cast of 25. The production had a budget of 10 million USD and ran 113 minutes.

On IMDb the film holds 5.9 out of 10 from around 1,800 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6 from about 148 votes. The modest vote counts suggest a limited international audience, and the gap between the two scores suggests viewers responded to it somewhat differently depending on the platform.
