I Know That Voice is a documentary about the people who supply the voices behind animated characters, from traditional cartoons to 3D animation and video games. Directed by Lawrence Shapiro, it brings together voice actors and dubbing performers who explain how they approach their craft and how they came to be associated with particular characters.
The film examines what the work actually involves, why it amounts to more than simply reading lines aloud, and what it is like to move from one project to the next. A recurring theme is that the profession is not always taken seriously, and that some people do not believe the performers when they claim to be the voices of well-known figures. The documentary also gives many of these actors a rare chance to appear on screen rather than being heard only.
Shapiro produced the film with Tommy Reid for Dundee Entertainment, Cinovative and Record Farm Industries. It runs 95 minutes and was released in January 2014. The credited cast numbers 119, among them Charlie Adler, Pamela Adlon, Carlos Alazraqui, Jack Angel, Ed Asner and Hank Azaria, all appearing as themselves. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.4 from around 3,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.1 from just over a hundred votes.
