Calvaire

Days before Christmas, travelling entertainer Marc Stevens is driving through the wooded, marshy Hautes Fagnes region near Liège when his van gives out. A stranger searching for a missing dog leads him to a shuttered inn, where the owner, M. Bartel, offers him a room and promises to help repair the vehicle. Bartel warns him to stay away from the nearby village. The warning goes unheeded, and Marc finds himself among people who have lost their hold on reality, caught up in a shared delusion surrounding a woman who left the community. What begins as an enforced overnight stay turns into something far more dangerous.

Calvaire is a Belgian, Luxembourg and French horror film directed by Fabrice Du Welz, who wrote the screenplay with Romain Protat. It was Du Welz's first feature, and the earliest entry in a filmography that continued with Vinyan, Colt 45, Message from the King, Adoration, Inexorable and Maldoror. Laurent Lucas plays Marc, with Jackie Berroyer as Bartel, Jean-Luc Couchard as Boris, Philippe Nahon as Robert Orton, Philippe Grand'Henry as Tomas Orton and Jo Prestia as Fermier Mylène. The film runs 88 minutes.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.1 from around 15,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.9 from roughly 379 votes. A critics' rating of 5.9 from 32 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a divided but not dismissive response.
