Breaking and Entering

Will Francis is a landscape architect whose firm has moved into a newly redeveloped area of King's Cross in London. The offices, along with other businesses in the district, are repeatedly targeted by local thieves, and after the police prove ineffective, Will decides to track down one of the burglars himself. His pursuit leads him to Miro, a teenage boy, and to Miro's mother Amira, a Bosnian widow raising her son alone. Will keeps what he knows about the boy from her and instead builds a friendship with Amira, while his relationship with his partner Liv, who is preoccupied with her young daughter, has grown distant. The connection he forms with Amira draws him into a life very different from his own.

Anthony Minghella directed and wrote the screenplay, with Tim Bricknell, Minghella and Sydney Pollack producing. It is the fourth of the five features Minghella directed, arriving after Cold Mountain. Jude Law heads the cast as Will, with Juliette Binoche as Amira, Robin Wright as Liv, Martin Freeman as Sandy, Vera Farmiga as Oana and Rafi Gavron as Miro, among 28 credited performers. Released in December 2006, the film took in about 9 million dollars worldwide against a modest critical standing, with an IMDb rating of 6.5 from roughly 24,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 6.1 from a much smaller pool. Those figures point to a film that found a limited audience rather than a broad one.
