Ida is a Danish hairdresser who has recently finished treatment for cancer. When she comes home and finds her husband Leif involved with a younger woman, she travels alone to Italy for the wedding of their daughter Astrid to Patrick. At the airport she has a run-in with Philip, a wealthy businessman who turns out to be the groom's father. Both are carrying their own losses: Philip has been widowed and lives alone in Denmark. The wedding weekend at an old Italian estate brings the two families together, and not everything goes as planned, with doubts surfacing among the couple and Leif eventually arriving with his new partner. In the middle of the confusion, Ida and Philip keep crossing paths.
