Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla is a Japanese science fiction action film directed by Masaaki Tezuka. A new Godzilla appears at Tateyama, and the Japanese government responds by building a cyborg called Kiryu, constructed around the skeletal remains of the original monster that attacked in 1954. The machine is placed under the control of JSDF pilot Akane Yashiro, who crashes her unit during the creature's first landfall and is left carrying the blame. Kiryu proves difficult to command, since something of the original Godzilla persists within it, and Akane must work through her own sense of failure while the military tries to make the weapon serve its purpose.
Yumiko Shaku plays Akane, with Shin Takuma, Kana Onodera, Koh Takasugi, Akira Nakao and Yusuke Tomoi among the credited cast of twenty-three. Wataru Mimura wrote the screenplay and Shogo Tomiyama produced for Toho Pictures. The film was released in Japan in November 2002 and runs 88 minutes. It was made for about 9 million dollars and took roughly 14 million worldwide, a modest return for a kaiju production of its scale.
It is the middle entry in Tezuka's trilogy of Godzilla films, following Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000) and preceding Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003). On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from around 6,200 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.5 from 273 votes.
