Short description

Bud Clay is a motorcycle racer who must travel from New Hampshire to California in five days to compete in his next event. As he crosses the United States, he is consumed by memories of Daisy, a woman from his past. To escape his grief and longing, Bud encounters several different women during his journey, yet these brief connections fail to replace the loss of his true love. Upon reaching Los Angeles, he is forced to confront a reality he had been trying to avoid.

The drama was written, produced, and directed by Vincent Gallo, following his previous directorial effort, Buffalo '66. Gallo also stars as the lead character, Bud Clay, appearing alongside Chloë Sevigny as Daisy. The supporting cast includes Cheryl Tiegs, Elizabeth Blake, Anna Vareschi, and Mary Morasky.

Produced by companies in the United States, France, and Japan, the film had a budget of 10 million USD. Audience reception has been mixed, with a rating of 4.9/10 on IMDb from 18,000 votes and 5.4/10 on TMDB from 284 votes. Film critics provided a similar score to the TMDB audience, with a rating of 5.4/10 based on 94 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The version shown at the Cannes Film Festival is 25 minutes longer than the released version. Approximately four minutes were cut from the motorcycle race at the beginning of the film, seven minutes from the drive to the Bonneville Salt Flats scene, and six minutes of black screen and music from the end of the film.
  • Vincent Gallo's second directorial work caused a scandal at the Cannes Film Festival. More specifically, it was the biggest scandal in the last twenty years. Under boos and jeers from the audience, the director eventually had to go on stage and offer a formal apology for his work, while his girlfriend Chloë Sevigny wiped away tears hiding behind the stage.
  • After the first screening in Cannes, the famous American film critic Roger Ebert called "The Brown Bunny" the worst film in the history of the festival. Upon returning to the US, Vincent Gallo re-edited the film. Ebert rated the shortened version three out of four stars (the festival rating system for films by critics), and passed the title of worst film on to "The Killing Room" by Briant Mendoza.
