Ishtar

Ishtar follows two untalented songwriters and performers, Lyle Rogers and Chuck Clarke, whose careers have gone nowhere. When their agent books them a engagement at a hotel in Morocco, the pair see a chance to finally make a name for themselves. Their trip instead entangles them in the politics of Ishtar, a fictional North African emirate, where a rebellion is brewing against the country's ruler and outside powers are taking an interest.

Elaine May directed and wrote the screenplay, her fourth film as director following A New Leaf, The Heartbreak Kid and Mikey and Nicky. Warren Beatty, who produced, stars as Lyle opposite Dustin Hoffman as Chuck, with Isabelle Adjani, Charles Grodin, Jack Weston and Tess Harper among the cast. The production was a large one, with a budget of 51 million dollars against a worldwide box office of about 14 million.

The film received a critics' rating of 4.5 out of 10 from 58 reviews, while audiences on TMDB give it 4.6 out of 10 from 171 votes, placing the two measures close together.
