Leap of Faith

Jonas Nightengale makes his living on the road, drawing crowds with revival meetings where healings and other wonders are staged rather than divinely granted. He travels with his manager, Jane Larson, and a small entourage, and the money collected from believers keeps the operation running. When their bus breaks down, the group is stranded in Rustwater, a small Kansas town hit hard by layoffs at the local steelworks. While Jane works on the local sheriff to keep the show going, Jonas turns his attention to Marva, a young woman who does not share the enthusiasm of the townspeople around her.

Steve Martin plays Jonas, with Debra Winger as Jane, Lolita Davidovich as Marva and Liam Neeson as Sheriff Will Braverman. Richard Pearce directed the film, which Janus Cercone wrote and David V. Picker and Michael Manheim produced. It followed Pearce's The Long Walk Home and came before A Family Thing in a directing career that began with Siege in 1978.

Released in December 1992, the Paramount production cost about 20 million USD and took in roughly 23 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from around 16,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.8 out of 10 from 237 votes, while a critics' rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 22 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
