Set in Paris in the winter of 1885, the film follows Augustine, a nineteen-year-old patient at the Salpêtrière hospital who is diagnosed with hysteria. She becomes the favoured subject of Professor Charcot, whose public demonstrations of hypnosis draw crowds and make her the centrepiece of his research. Over time, the relationship between doctor and patient shifts, and Augustine goes from being studied to being wanted.
Alice Winocour directed and wrote the film, her first feature, followed chronologically by Disorder, Proxima, Revoir Paris and Couture. SoKo plays Augustine and Vincent Lindon plays Charcot, with Chiara Mastroianni, Roxane Duran, Olivier Rabourdin and Lise Lamétrie among the credited cast of 68. The score of 7/10 from 36 reviews sits well above the audience ratings of 6.1/10 on IMDb and 5.1/10 on TMDB, where the vote counts are modest.
