Short description

Frank Allen is a professional speaker and author who has built a career on teaching people how to organize their lives down to the smallest detail. His own schedule is run with the same precision, until a small prank by his wife Susan throws his carefully ordered day off course. Questioning whether his rigid approach has served him well, Frank starts writing options on index cards and letting chance decide what he does next.

That decision sets off a series of events that unsettles his marriage and forces him to confront parts of his life he had kept firmly under control. Ryan Reynolds plays Frank, with Emily Mortimer as Susan and Stuart Townsend as his close friend Buddy. Sarah Chalke, Matreya Fedor and Mike Erwin appear in supporting roles, among a credited cast of twenty-eight. The screenplay was written by Daniel Taplitz, and Erica Westheimer and Frederic Golchan produced. It runs 87 minutes.

Chaos Theory was directed by Marcos Siega, arriving in 2008 after his two 2005 features, Pretty Persuasion and Underclassman. Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.6/10 from around 35,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.4/10 from 481 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.4/10 from 60 reviews places critical opinion below the audience scores on both platforms.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The idea for the film came to screenwriter Daniel Taplitz after doctors discovered he had a tumor. "I became interested in exploring a situation where a tiny piece of information could turn a person's life upside down," Taplitz says.
